How difficult is the Rainbow Mountain hike and what fitness level is required?

The Rainbow Mountain hike is considered moderately difficult to challenging due to the extreme altitude (5,200 meters/17,060 feet at the summit). The trail is approximately 7-8 km (4-5 miles) round trip with a 400-meter elevation gain. Average fitness is required, but the altitude makes it challenging even for fit travelers. Those with respiratory issues or heart conditions should consult a doctor before attempting this hike.

The dry season (May through October) offers the best conditions, with clearer skies and less mud on the trails. During rainy season (November through April), the colors may appear less vibrant, trails become muddy and slippery, and there’s a higher chance of cancellations due to adverse weather. June-August typically provides the most reliable weather but also brings the largest crowds.

This is an extremely early tour, with pickup typically between a: 4:00-5:00 AM from Cusco hotels. The full day lasts 12-15 hours, including a 3-4 hour drive each way, 3-4 hours of hiking time, and stops for breakfast and lunch. Most tours return to Cusco between 6:00-7:00 PM.

Essential items include: hiking boots or sturdy shoes with good traction, warm layers (temperatures at the summit can be below freezing even on sunny days), a waterproof/windproof jacket, hat, gloves, sunscreen, sunglasses, water (2 liters minimum), snacks, cash for entrance fees or horse rental if not included, and hiking poles if you use them (some tour operators provide these)

Yes, horses are available for rent along the trail (typically $30-40 USD) that can take you most of the way up, though you’ll still need to walk the final steep section to the viewpoint. However, availability is not guaranteed, especially during peak season, and should not be relied upon as your primary plan.

Great trip. Well organised and great guide. Transport on time. The walk was quite easy but would recommend wearing sensible shoes or not trainers/ flip flops.
