Featured Questions

Most Popular Questions.

Here we answer the most popular questions

Is the 7 Lakes trek harder than Rainbow Mountain?

Yes, this trek is more challenging due to:

  • Higher altitude (peaks at 4,800m vs. Vinicunca’s 5,200m)
  • Longer hike (4-5 hours vs. 2-3 hours at Vinicunca)
  • Uneven terrain (rocky paths, no stairs)

However, the stunning lakes and solitude make it worth the effort!

While no technical skills are required, this trek is best for:

  • Travelers with good fitness (able to hike 8km at altitude)
  • Those acclimatized to Cusco (2-3 days minimum)
  • Beginners can join but should rent a horse (available for support).

Dry season (May–October) is ideal:
✔ Sunny days (colder mornings, ~0°C)
✔ Clear views of the lakes and glaciers

Rainy season (Nov–April) is possible but:
✖ Trails can be muddy/slippery
✖ Clouds may obscure mountain views

  • Layers! (thermal base, fleece, waterproof jacket)
  • Sturdy hiking boots (waterproof recommended)
  • Sun protection (hat, SPF 50+, sunglasses)
  • Coca leaves/snacks for altitude
  • Camera/phone (endless photo ops!)

Only basic toilets (paid, ~2 PEN) at the trailhead. No facilities during the hike—bring toilet paper and hand sanitizer.

My boyfriend and I enjoyed a wonderful hike in Ausangate. The scenery was wonderful, but our guide´s respect for and knowledge of the mountains and Andean tradition made this trek incredible beyond the views.
